The Archiver, Episode #04

George Halliwell

In One Shell Straight to Hell there are many characters. Here you learn the truth of George Halliwell.

Tapescript:

Transcript By the time the new millennium had begun the custodian of the Halliwell Estate was no other than George Halliwell. George told his mother he was not cut out for the life of a Halliwell and went to serve in the Navy instead where, as a hardy young man of breeding, he easily took to life as an officer.

In truth, George had known from a very young age that he was not as other men, a sentiment that was confirmed when he had a dalliance with a young gardener. All things considered, it was very chaste – little more than a year of giggling closeness and kissing in the orchard – but George was intensely conflicted about it all. His rather naïve attempt to make himself more manly in his own eyes, in the Navy of all places, was doomed before it began.

A lifetime of pretending to be something he is not has left George with a deep vein of bitterness and anger, much as he tries to hide it. His distinguished service in combat was, in truth, simply a lashing out at the world and at himself. That he survived is down to luck at least as much as skill, although he has that, too.

Although an excellent officer, his self-loathing became self-destructive and, after a bloody encounter with pirates in which he nearly lost a leg, he was honourably discharged. He tried to content himself with gardening in retirement, presenting himself as a jovial, confirmed bachelor, but secretly – although he would never admit it to himself – wishing for a romantic companionship he knows he will never have.
